Goals of Treatment: To help the client maintain abstinence, avoid high risk behaviors and comply with the stipulations placed on them by the court for their DUI counseling, so they can put it behind them and get on with their lives.
Relapse Prevention: If you are unable to remain sober. You may want to use individual drug and alcohol counseling to look at some of the most common causes of relapse:
Family of origin issues.
a) Do you isolate yourself from other people?
b) Do you respond with anxiety to authority figures?
c) Do you confuse pity with love?
d) Do you attract people who tend to be compulsive?
e) Do you find it difficult to express your emotions?
f) Do you cling to relationships because you are afraid of being alone?
g) Do you have trouble with intimate relationships?
Untreated depression.

TEST YOURSELF: Are you a social drinker or a problem drinker?

3) Do you ever wake up in the morning and find that you can't remember some of what you did and said the night before?
4) Have things you did or said while drinking embarrassed you or others?
5) Do you think of people who do not drink as stuffy and boring?
6) Do you finish your first drink faster than most people?
7) Do you think it would be difficult to enjoy life if you could never have another drink?
8) Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a period of time and then not kept your promise to yourself?
9) Do you always finish your last drink even though you don't really want it?

If you answered yes to 11 or more of the questions you may be alcohol dependent and should consider in-patient treatment.
